TESLA Motors

I went to visit TESLA Motors in Fremont, CA the other day, and that gave me some interesting perspectives and inspirations for how office environments could be more inspiring and openminded!

First of all TESLA deliberately made sure that the company colors was represented in every possible way for instance their production site was a constant reminder of the TESLA color and brand. This might seem simple but actually doing it is in my perspective important for creating a common culture and a sense of community around the company and its core; the TEAM!

This press machine TESLA picked up in Detroit in around 50 trucks to press sides and other parts of the TESLA cars. As expected the machine is painted in Tesla’s colors.

Production Site Colors

The robots are painted in TESLA red, while the production floor is TESLA white and clean

The colors goes all the way up to the ceiling! Perhaps a metaphore for their explosive growth at the moment

Colours of Tesla

The conference rooms was painted in Tesla colors and named by bay bridge areas

Second of all Tesla focuses on bringing the employees as close to the product as possible, they do that by for instance placing workspaces for engineers inside the production facilities in order for them to get the atmosphere and production under their skin and calculations.

Are you close enough to your products and production to leverage from the processes?

Engineering in the Garage

By having the engineers closer to the production TESLA is trying to minimize gaps between the two parties

Third of all Tesla tries to create an atmosphere of everybody working together by creating extremely large open office environments. According to TESLA they are breaking down the silos and traditional ways of working in the transportation industry, by working cross functional and open spaced at their office. In the office there are no walls stopping communication to float all over the space.

Open office environments

The spaces leave opportunities to have meeting everywhere, and must foster a lot of informal meetings and knowledge sharing

Here is the view of intense work being done on the first floor of the office space

A lot of opinions have been expressed over the years about open office environments, and yes it have its advantages and disadvantages like everything else here in life. I would love to hear your experiences both good and bad about open office environments, so leave a comment or send me an email

Why I believe changes in work spaces matters!

Sitting here in a RV on my way to Lake Tahoe reflecting on why I believe that office environments affect our ways of working. First of all I would like to point out that I believe that environments does affect our culture and ways of working, hereby not claiming the physical space as the only factor for culture and well being. However I find it striking how few organizations that pays attention to the relation between the employees well being and their productivity due to good and healthy environments!

What if the environments was perfectly setup with the right amount of light, seating, thermal temperature, amount of fresh air? Do you believe you would be more productive and happy? I sure would!
Perhaps management could understand the importance if they could save money on a decrease in sick absences if their employees weren’t sick because of unhealthy environments? Or if the creative teams didn’t just have to stare into white walls and ceilings because it fits so nice to they straight and clinical corporate brand. Enough of my dissatisfaction! My blog has the purpose of highlight the cool examples of well thought workspaces and put a focus on what makes good and healthy environments – So welcome and enjoy!

Sony Playstation’s American Headquarter

I visited Sony Playstation’s new American Headquarters this monday in San Mateo, CA.

The buildings has a lot of elegant and organic shapes, spiced with artefacts bound to the product of playstation. For instance the reception desk had the Playstation carved into blue plexiglass, and the buttons from the Playstation controller (cross, triangle, circle and quadrant) was used to guide visitors through the check-in counters.

The Playstation Logo was carved into frosted blue plexiglass.

The Welcoming Banner disguised by avatars from Playstation Games

The Banner was placed above the reception area, with a lot of space and air around it

The nice green areas with fountains and flowers provides a nice and peaceful atmosphere for the workers to enjoy when working in the buildings surrounding the green areas.

AOL Headquarter in Palo Alto, CA

I was touring a danish delegation of MBA students the other day, and we were so lucky to be taken on a tour around the headquarters of AOL in Palo Alto.

At AOL they do a lot to create a entrepreneurial spirit in their incubator space as well as meeting rooms. Especially their Barrel formed meeting rooms had a nice atmosphere and a fresh breath of air, unlike the “normal meeting rooms”
